LICENSE
RECALL is a Shareware product. As such, it is made available to the
general computing public for evaluation. Users are licensed to
operate RECALL on their personal computers for the purpose of test
and evalua- tion on a trial basis for a limited trial period. It is
not possible to reasonably define any definitive limits of a fair
and equitable time period for evaluation, therefore it is left to
the user's judgment and sense of fair play as to the time required
to make a decision as to its usefulness. If the user decides the
program is not of sufficient merit to warrant purchase through
registration with Patri-Soft, the program should be removed from
their personal computer. Otherwise, if the program is deemed useful
and is in regular use on the user's personal computer system,
registration with Patri-Soft is required.
Registered users are those users that elect to pay for RECALL and
register by payment with Patri-Soft. By virtue of registration and
payment for the program, registered users are granted a license to
continue to utilize the program on their personal computer for as
long as they choose. This license authorizes the user to use the
program on any personal computer system he or she may own so long as
the program is operated on only one computer system at a time.
Site licenses for use of RECALL on multiple computers are available
upon request at a reduced fee that is based upon the number of
single machines licensed for use.

REGISTRATION
RECALL is sole property of Patri-Soft Shareware products. The
Shareware version, and ONLY that version, may be freely copied and
transferred to individual parties for evaluation purposes. The
Shareware version, and ONLY that version, may be posted on Bulletin
Board Systems (BBS) for electronic access as long as NO FEE is
charged for its distribution except for private BBS operations that
charge a regular user subscrip- tion fee. Computer information
services such as Compuserve (CIS), Genie, etc., are authorized to
post this product for subscriber access. The Shareware version of
RECALL may NOT be distributed on diskette by any disk
distributor/vendor that charges more than $12.00 for the diskette
upon which the program and attendant files are recorded without
written consent from Patri-Soft.
RECALL is a fully functional Shareware product. Shareware is a
computer program distribution/marketing method that permits
potential buyers to thoroughly try the program prior to purchase. It
is NOT free and it is not in the Public Domain. If, after
evaluating the program, you find it to be useful enough to use on a
regular basis, you are expected to pay for it by registering with
Patri-Soft. The registration fee is $25.00 and the registered
version, which is NOT distributed as Shareware, will not contain the
opening Shareware screen nor the closing messages. You will also
receive a Printed manual with extended instruction for the operation
of RECALL including many examples of the use of the many features,
and illustrations of all the various features in use.
Those who have registered a previous version (prior to version 2.0)
of RECALL or of WPGRAB may purchase RECALL version 2.x as an upgrade
for $5.00. Please be advised that I cannot accept credit card
orders for the upgrade. Checks/cash only, please!
You may register RECALL in one of three ways:
1) By mail with check or money order to:
Patri-Soft, P.O. Box 8263 San Bernardino, CA 92412

The Patri-Soft Shareware Products BBS operates 24 hours per day, 7
days per week, open to all callers. Registered users receive access
to the latest version of RECALL within 1 day after signing on to the
BBS and leaving the required information so that their status as a
registered user may be verified. You MUST log on and leave a
comment to the sysop to the effect that you are a registered user
and desire access. The author can also be reached on CIS via PPN
76347,2477 (please use MAIL).
The Shareware version of RECALL may be freely copied and passed on
to other individual users for their evaluation.
We support our software. One of the great strengths of the
Shareware concept is the interaction between the program's authors
and its users. Many of the features contained in RECALL are the
result of user input. If you have a problem evaluating this program
or want to make a suggestion, comment, or complaint, please contact
us immediately. Even after registering RECALL, if you later
determine that it is unsuitable for your use, you may contact us for
a refund. It is not necessary that you be a registered user to
contact us for technical support. Technical support will be
available through the U.S mail, telephone, or the Patri-Soft BBS.

WHAT IS RECALL??
----------------
RECALL, formerly WPGRAB, was initially developed to provide a
facility to use for Word Perfect to allow for the listing and
selection of files by listing date. Since we worked on many files
for home and business, we wanted to be able to see the files that
were last modified - and WPGRAB was the answer. Later, WPGRAB
became obsolete, replaced by WordPerfect's own LIST function. Now
we have brought it back, broadening it's use to all applications.
We have renamed WPGRAB to RECALL, to remove the idea that the WP
stands for Word Perfect (it originally stood for Word Processing).
GETTING STARTED
---------------
RECALL is easy to use. Issue the command RECALL and RECALL will
automatically scan your directory and provide you with a list of ALL
files sorted in descending date order (newest to oldest). The HELP
reminder in the lower right corner may be toggled between letter
commands and F-key commands by pressing the spacebar. [Note:
Before beginning to select files for processing, a few defaults have
to be set. Further explanation of this is provided in Menu Options.]
RECALL also includes directories in its file listing, so that you
can easily move around directories in search of a file. When you
have located the file you wish to process, press ENTER, and RECALL
will do one of three things:
A) exit and automatically start the desired appli-
cation [SPAWN],
B) invoke the desired application as a sub-task, or
C) generate a batch file.
For invoking large applications, the spawn feature is the most conve-
nient.
COMMAND FORMAT
--------------
RECALL [fspec]
[fspec] Enter the DOS file specification for the directory and its
filenames to be searched. If no directory is specified, the current
directory is used, with all filenames except those excluded by the
filter setup (see below). Wildcards may be used.
Example: RECALL
Invokes the program in the current directory, and displays all non-
filtered files.
RECALL Version 2.5 April 1991 Copyright 1991 by Patri-Soft Page 9
Example: RECALL \TOPDIR\SUBDIR\
Invokes the program in \TOPDIR\SUBDIR directory and displays all non-
filtered files.
Example: RECALL C:\AU*.*
Invokes the program in the root directory of C: drive and displays all
non-filtered files that begin with AU (such as AUTOEXEC.BAT).
Menu Options:
------------
Part of the power of RECALL lies in its menu options. While in the
full screen menu/file listing, you have several commands available
to you.
Press O to display the following options:
Filter Directories
------------------
Setting this flag to Y will filter out all directory names in
the files list and display file names only.
Use last current directory
--------------------------
RECALL saves the last directory processed each time RECALL is
used. If you want RECALL to start with the last directory
processed, set this flag to Y.
Color
-----
If your monitor makes some parts of the RECALL display hard to
read, set this flag to B. Save the options and exit RECALL.
The next time you start RECALL the display will be in black and
white. Typically this will be necessary for some monochrome
monitors such as the AT&T 6300 and many laptop computers which
use a pseudo-color display.
Name and path of application to invoke
--------------------------------------
When you press ENTER on a filename, RECALL automatically
generates a command using the name found in this field. Note:
If using the spawn method, a .BAT file must be called by making
the default application COMMAND.COM with the .BAT file name
being on the parameters line. (See parameters, below).
ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT: If your application is in any way
self-modifying, you need to specify the FULL name and path.
Example: C:\WORD\WRITE.EXE.
Failure to do so may cause your application to crash.
RECALL Version 2.5 April 1991 Copyright 1991 by Patri-Soft Page 10
Optional parameters
-------------------
Some applications require additional parameters for normal
operation. Place those parameters in this field, and each time
RECALL builds a command, it will append the parameters to it.
If the application os a .BAT file, the parameter line MUST be
in the form /C=[d:][dir]<filename>.BAT.
Example: /C=C:\MYDIR\MYBAT.BAT
Directory to change to before execution
---------------------------------------
Some programs require that you be in the directory of the
application before you begin. This field provides for that.
Leave it blank if no directory change is desired.
Name of batch file to write
---------------------------
When building a command, RECALL can generate a batch file to
invoke later. Write the name of that batch file here. Do not
confuse this with the ability to run a .BAT file as your
application set in "Name and path of application to invoke"
above. If you use this option, RECALL will write a batch file
that you may then run repeatedly from the DOS command line. For
example, if you have a catch-all note file into which you put
all your thoughts as they occur, you might like to have RECALL
prepare a batch file for you which you would call to load you
straight into your favorite word processor and the file. In
the example batch file included with RECALL this may be
incorporated into an outer batch file that calls RECALL and
then the batch file it creates. This ability is included
mainly for those former users of WPGRAB who prefer this method.
Your next choice is important. As stated before, when you press
ENTER, RECALL either spawns or invokes your application, or
generates a batch file. You decide what you want RECALL to do by
setting this option.
SPAWN: RECALL will exit to DOS before it executes the command
line it builds, leaving all memory to your application.
SUB-TASK: RECALL builds the command line and executes it, but
does not exit. When you quit your application, you will be
returned to RECALL. This is useful to select when processing a
lot of files.
GENERATE BATCH FILE: RECALL can generate a batch file with the
necessary command line. Some prefer to run a batch file which
first calls RECALL and then the batch file that RECALL creates.
(File included, WPS.BAT is an example.)
RECALL Version 2.5 April 1991 Copyright 1991 by Patri-Soft Page 11
Saving the defaults
-------------------
F10 permanently accepts the settings, F9 makes the changes for the
session only, and ESC aborts and restores the previous defaults.
Press F1 when in this setup mode to get on line help.
MACROS
------
In a typical file management system, there are many applications
that are often invoked. RECALL would be far too limiting if you
could use only one application. For that reason, RECALL has been
programmed to specify up to 27 different applications by using the
ALT-letter keys.
This is where you find the power and flexibility of RECALL. Suppose
you like to use PC-WRITE for editing ASCII text files, but have
WordPerfect as your default program. You could set up ALT-E to run
PC-Write as a sub-task. Press ALT-E to invoke PC-Write, and return
to RECALL when you have finished editing. Valid ALT keys are A - Z.
Defining a macro
----------------
Press M at the menu. You are prompted for the key to define.
Press the appropriate ALT key (Example ALT-L). You will be
prompted for the name and path of the application to invoke,
optional parameters, and whether this application is to be
spawned, invoked as a sub-task, or written into a batch file.
Press F9 to see a list of macros already defined.
The fields in the Macro definition area are:
Path and Application Name
-------------------------
Enter SPECIFIC information on the exact path and
filename of your application.
Example: C:\LOTUS\123.EXE
If your application is a .BAT file, see remarks under
"Name and path of application to invoke" above.
Directory to change to before execution
---------------------------------------
Some programs require that you be in the directory
of the application before you begin: enter the
directory name here. Otherwise leave it blank.
RECALL Version 2.5 April 1991 Copyright 1991 by Patri-Soft Page 12
Command to build
----------------
Enter the parameters and the filename/path. "%"
will be replaced by the filename and path under the
highlight bar at the time of execution. "#" is
replaced only by the filename. If your application
is a .BAT file, the "Path and Application Name"
(see above) MUST be COMMAND.COM and this option
MUST begin /C=[d:][dir]<filename>.BAT with "%" or
"#" and other parameters following if needed. (See
example under "Optional Parameters" above).
Press F1 when in the Macros option to get on line help.
F4 and F5 EXCLUDING FILES
-------------------------
Filenames and/or patterns may be excluded from RECALL
processing. A file named RECALL.EXC must be in the same
directory as RECALL.EXE. It may contain filenames, patterns,
or directories. RECALL.EXC is a simple ASCII file. It must
contain only one filename or pattern per line. For example, to
exclude RECALL.DAT from being displayed, add the line
RECALL.DAT or EXC RECALL.DAT
You may also specify files to display despite a wildcard exclusion.
Suppose that you want to exclude all the RECALL*.* files, with the
exception of RECALL.DOC. Add the lines
RECALL*.* or EXC RECALL*.*
SEL RECALL.DOC
Even though RECALL*.* is specified, the SEL (select) statement
allows RECALL.DOC to be displayed.
To exclude an entire directory, use this format in the exclude
file:
EXC \WP\SYS**\*.*
This excludes all files in \WP\SYS and all directories with
their files that are subordinate to \WP\SYS.
To add a file to the exclude list, highlight the file to be
excluded in the menu/file listing and press F4. RECALL will
exclude all files which match the extension of the undesired
file. For example, highlight this file:
BALLOONS.WPG
and press F4. RECALL will add a line to the exclude file that
looks like this:
EXC *.WPG.
To exclude a file pattern for the current session only, press F5.
RECALL Version 2.5 April 1991 Copyright 1991 by Patri-Soft Page 13
SEARCHING FOR TEXT
------------------
Press T to search for files containing a specific text string.
RECALL can search for up to 5 different text strings with
several options. You may change the options at any time while
specifying strings by pressing the appropriate F key.
F7 toggles search logic between AND or OR. AND logic requires
RECALL to find ALL the text strings in one file if it is to
qualify as a match. OR logic tells RECALL that a match exists
if any of the text strings can be found in the file.
F8 toggles case sensitivity.
F9 toggles between text selection types. This option offers
four choices:
NORMAL, WORD, PREFIX, and SUFFIX
Suppose that the search string is "and".
NORMAL means any string of text containing "and" will be a match.
There are no other requirements to qualify as a match
Word Type: NORMAL
Recall will find: and, land, candy, android.
WORD means that the match must be a complete word; that is,
separated from all other words by a space or punctuation.
Word type: WORD
Recall will find: and
PREFIX means that the match must begin with the specified text
string.
Word Type: PREFIX
Recall will find: and, android
SUFFIX means that the match must end with the specified text
string.
Word Type: SUFFIX:
Recall will find: and, land
Press F1 when using this option to get on line help.
RECALL Version 2.5 April 1991 Copyright 1991 by Patri-Soft Page 14
LOCATE A FILE BY NAME
---------------------
Locating a file among hundreds of others can be difficult.
Press L and enter the search name or pattern. RECALL searches
from the top of the list of the current directory down,
highlighting the filename when found.
AGAIN (REPEAT LOCATE)
---------------------
To repeat the locate process, press A. This continues the
search for the filename beginning at the highlight. A message
displays if no files match the search pattern.
NAME SEARCH
-----------
RECALL also has a quick name search. Press N to start the
search, then as you press letters, the first name beginning
with the letters entered is highlighted. If you enter a letter
that causes the search pattern not to match any filename in the
current directory a message displays. Press enter to return to
the main display with the last filename found highlighted.
Example, if the current directory contains:
RAMBO.DOC
REALTIME.LET
RECALL.DOC
RECALL.UPD
Press R to jump to RAMBO.DOC. When you add E (RE
displayed) you will jump to REALTIME.LET, add C and
move to RECALL.DOC. Add U, making a search pattern
of RECU which isn't in any filename in the current
directory, and the message
No files found.
Press any key
displays. Press a key and you will return to the
main display with RECALL.DOC highlighted.
RECALL Version 2.5 April 1991 Copyright 1991 by Patri-Soft Page 15
FIND A FILE BY NAME
-------------------
If you have a complex directory structure with several disk
drives, the search for a particular filename is much more
involved. RECALL makes the process easy for you. Press F
while in the main menu.
Enter the file name or pattern you wish RECALL to find in the
first field. The following patterns are valid:
RECALL.DOC -- Finds ONLY RECALL.DOC
RECALL.* --Finds all files beginning
with RECALL with any extension
*CALL*.DOC -- Finds any .DOC file with
CALL in its name
The search is usually limited to the current directory tree.
To search a different directory, enter its name in the second
field. Leave blank (press spacebar) to search whole drives.
Enter drives to be searched in the third field. RECALL
searches the drives in order, displaying the results as it
searches. At any time during the search, abort by pressing
ESC. Press SPACEBAR to halt the search and display the
filenames found to that point.
After all the files are found the RECALL display functions
exactly the same as the main screen. All macros and the View
feature (press V) are active. Press F9 to change directory
and quit to RECALL. ESC returns to RECALL in the original
directory.
Press F1 when using this option to get on line help.
SORT FILENAME DISPLAY
---------------------
Press S to sort the list in the main display. Choices are by
Date, Size, or Alphabetical. Press the appropriate letter
(D,S,A) for descending sort, or number (1,2,3) for ascending
sort and RECALL will sort the list instantly.
Press F1 when using this option to get on line help.
CHANGE DIRECTORY
----------------
To switch directories in search of an elusive file press C.
You will be prompted for an alternate directory and filespec.
(See also the F2 or / option).]
RECALL Version 2.5 April 1991 Copyright 1991 by Patri-Soft Page 16
DELETE A FILE
-------------
Press D to delete the highlighted file. RECALL will prompt
you to confirm the deletion.
ENTER KEY INVOKES DEFAULT APPLICATION
-------------------------------------
To build a command using the default application you have
defined, press ENTER. RECALL will spawn, invoke, or generate
a batch file according to your setup. You should set the
defaults so that ENTER calls your primary application.
If you have a sub-directory name under the highlight, pressing
ENTER will jump to that new directory and display all files in
it that are not excluded by the filter option.
F10 TO INVOKE WITHOUT A FILENAME
--------------------------------
You can start your main application without a filename by
pressing F10. The application will use the current working
directory.
F2 AND / FILTER OUT FILE NAMES
------------------------------
To filter out file names, and leave only directories on the
display, press /. If ENTER is pressed on a directory, RECALL
will display the filenames for the new directory. To toggle
back to files and directories without pressing ENTER, press /
again. If you do not want filenames displayed press F2
instead of /. This is useful to switch directories quickly.
